ALLIED MILLS QUALITY and PRODUCT SAFETY POLICY

STATEMENT
Allied Mills are Millers and Suppliers of consistently high quality flour, semolina and wheat-based products, operating four flour mills and one semolina mill, located at Tilbury, Manchester and Belfast

These products are manufactured to defined standards and specifications to meet the functionality and product safety requirements of our customers, under conditions which meet all the requirements of statutory legislation.

Our quality and product safety standards relate to all aspects of our business including raw materials, product development, production, presentation, hygiene, finished products and service to our customers.

Raw materials are purchased from assured sources and are delivered and stored in accordance with industry codes of practice. HACCP ( hazard, analysis, critical control points) principles and systems are applied throughout the process as well as monitoring for pesticide residues, other agricultural contaminants and microbiological risks.

We constantly strive to improve the way we do things and have systems and controls in place that enable us to achieve this.

Customer and employee satisfaction are key objectives. These and other quality objectives are developed to ensure we meet the needs of our customers, employees and the business. Systems are in place to measure and review our achievements in these areas.

We place particular importance upon the contribution that all employees make to quality, product safety and the business. The competence and commitment of our staff is supported by the necessary education, training and development to enable our quality standards to be maintained at the appropriate level. All of our sites are recognised Investors In People or aiming for the accreditation.

The operation of a Quality Management System in accordance with the requirement of BS EN ISO 9001:2000, the application of HACCP principles throughout the process and other external standards against which the company is assessed, including the nabim Standard for Intake Laboratories, enables us to formalise our commitment to quality and product safety, ensuring that all employees participate in the improvement process. All sites are also accredited to the Environmental Standard ISO 14001:2004 and a higher level status has been achieved in accordance with The British Retail Consortium Technical Standard.

Group Health and Safety Policy

A.1 Statement of Health & Safety Policy

1.1. Associated British Foods plc (ABF) considers Health and Safety as equal in importance to that of any other function of the company and its business objectives.

1.2. Within the overall context of complying with all relevant legislation, the responsibility for health and safety within each division or operating company rests with its Chief Executive or Managing Director.

B.1 The Aims of the Health and Safety Policy

1.1. ABF will take such steps as are reasonably practicable to ensure that it and its UK divisions and operating companies meet their health and safety objectives. These are:-

1.1.1. To provide and maintain safe and healthy working places and systems of work in order to protect all employees and others, including visitors and the public, in so far as they come into contact with foreseeable work hazards.

1.1.2. To provide and maintain a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, taking into account individuals’ needs and abilities.


1.1.3. To develop safety awareness amongst all employees to enable them to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and of other people who may be affected by their acts or omissions.

C.1 Methods to Achieve Objectives

1.2. ABF will meet the above objectives by:-

1.2.1. Ensuring that this policy is used as a working document and its contents are publicised fully to all employees.

1.2.2. Ensuring that this policy is periodically reviewed and amended as necessary.

1.2.3. Ensuring that each of its UK divisions and operating companies operational standards policy complies with applicable legislation and achieves the aim of this policy.

1.2.4. Holding a twice-yearly meeting of ABF’s health and safety specialists in order to maintain common standards and for an exchange of ideas and best practice.

C.1 Methods to Achieve Objectives ( Continued )

1.2.5. Circulating annual health and safety questionnaires to be completed by each UK division and operating company, the results of which will enable ABF to confirm their compliance with applicable legislation and therefore achieve the aims of this policy.

1.3. Each of ABF’s UK divisions and operating companies shall meet the objectives set out in B.1 by:-

1.3.1. Ensuring that it drafts an operational standards policy to meet its own specific health and safety requirements.

1.3.2. Identifying the hazards and assessing the risk of harm to employees and others arising from its activities.

1.3.3. Carrying out a formal review of the risk assessment and procedures in the event of a change in circumstances in working procedure or environment or after an accident and, in any event, at least every two years.

1.3.4. Providing all employees with an adequate level of health and safety information, instruction, supervision and training. Such information, instruction, supervision and training to be based on the employees’ individual needs and circumstances.

1.3.5. Providing suitable procedures for responding to accidents and emergencies, including fires.

1.3.6. Auditing the health and safety aspects of its activities at least annually.

1.3.7. Identifying a person at board level and a person at operational level who is accountable for health and safety performance.

1.3.8. Holding an annual operating management or board level meeting to review all aspects of its health and safety performance.

1.3.9. Defining the health and safety rules and responsibility of all managers.

1.3.10. Reporting relevant accidents to the authorities.

1.3.11. Reporting its health and safety performance to ABF at the end of September each year by returning the annual questionnaire and providing a copy of the minutes of the board meeting referred to at point 1.3.8.

D.1 Responsibilities

1.1. The purpose of this health and safety policy is to establish as far as possible requisite standards across ABF’s UK divisions and operating companies. This policy statement is binding on ABF and each of its UK divisions and operating companies. It is intended that each UK division and operating company will attach its own specific operational standards policy to this document.


ALLIED MILLS ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Allied Mills are millers and suppliers of consistently high quality flour, semolina and wheat based products, and is committed to continual improvement in environmental performance to protect the environment.

The Group Technical Services Manager will be responsible for the development of an environmental management system.

General Managers will be responsible for their sites environmental performance in line with the group environmental management system and for ensuring compliance with legislative and other applicable requirements.

The company identifies and manages any significant impacts in the environment through its management system and ensures the following;

  • Environmental matters are integrated into all areas of the business.
  • Energy is used efficiently and consumption is monitored.
  • Emissions to air, releases to water and land, are controlled.
  • Solid waste is reduced, reused or recycled where practicable.
  • Environmental issues are considered when making purchasing decisions.
  • Products are transported efficiently to minimise fuel usage, consistent with customers demands, and vehicle fleet operations.
  • Accidents are prevented so far as reasonably practicable.
  • Effective emergency response procedures are in place to minimise the impact of incidents.
  • All employees are encouraged to participate in improving environmental performance and understanding their role in this.
  • Makes the policy available to the public and communicates with stakeholders as appropriate.

Health & Safety Executive guidelines

In the past few years Allied Mills have been implementing the Health & Safety Executive guidelines on manual handling limits Allied Mills in recognition of the need to reduce the risk of injury to their own millers, warehousemen and drivers as well as customer employees. Allied Mills focus in there supply of 16kg Bags as this fits well with HSE guidelines, 25kg's can be supplied on request.
