Carbon Footprint:
Carbon foot printing is a measure of the impact our activities on the environment, and in particular climate change. It relates to the amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day to day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation etc
A carbon footprint is a measure of all greenhouse gases we produce and has units of tonnes or kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e)
Allied Mills are able to calculate their carbon footprint for wheat flour and durum semolina products to the PAS 2050 specification.
The results, calculated and verified by ethical environmental accounting consultants, Sustain, form part of a broad range of sustainability projects, aimed at providing a responsible response to global challenges faced by industry and consumers over the coming century. Through the PAS 2050 calculation it allows us to reduce our carbon footprint by monitoring our miles and responding where possible for example moving road tankers on to the rail network.
This major project has helped Allied Mills identify areas where they can work to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with the added benefit of improving business efficiencies and providing potential cost savings.
Sustainable values have been part of Allied Mills’ signature practice for several years and have enabled them to introduce class leading innovations. Allied Mills has been supplying customers in Scotland using an intermodal rail solution for 6 years now. This has resulted in a saving of over 340,000 road miles per annum and an equivalent reduction in carbon emission of 464mt. In addition to this we are trialling intermodal from the eastern side of England to Wales.
Ventures embracing stakeholders throughout the supply chain are being implemented by the Allied Mills team to the benefit of employee’s, the wider community, our customers and the environment. By working with our customers on sustainable projects we have been able to provide enterprising solutions, adding real value to both businesses, while lessening our impact on our environment.
Currently Allied Mills is the only UK flour and semolina miller to be able to calculate their carbon footprint.
